Spanish Question Words: _qué, quién, dónde, cuándo, cómo, cuánto, por qué_

Question words help you ask about people, places, times and reasons. In Spanish they always carry an accent, and the question has _¿_ at the start and _?_ at the end. Read the rules, then try the exercises.

The rule

People, things, places and time: qué, quién, dónde, cuándo

  • How much: ¿Cuánto cuesta? — Dos euros.
  • How many: cuánto agrees with the noun: ¿Cuántos años tienes? / ¿Cuántas hermanas tienes?
  • Reason: ¿Por qué estudias español?

Accents and por qué vs porque

  • Accent in questions: ¿Dónde?, ¿Qué?, ¿Cómo? always have an accent.
  • Asking why: two words with accent: ¿Por qué no vienes?
  • Answering because: one word, no accent: Porque tengo trabajo.
