How much does a Spanish tutor cost per hour?

There is no single price. It depends on who teaches, how and for what. Here is what the market looks like, so you can compare.

Average price of an online Spanish tutor

  • italki estimates that private online Spanish tutors cost about €14 to €55 per hour, with lessons from €4 per hour on its platform.
  • Preply states that its lessons start at €3 and average €16 per class. Its native-speaker tutors average about €23 per hour, and tutors from Spain about €33.
  • Superprof gives an average of €23 per hour in the United States.

Figures converted from the platforms’ USD prices at about €0.92 per dollar and rounded. Prices change, so check the source.

Why do Spanish tutor prices vary so much?

The same hour of Spanish can cost €9 or €74. The difference usually comes from four things.

Native tutor vs non-native tutor

Native tutors give you natural pronunciation, current expressions and cultural context. Where the tutor is from also matters. Preply’s own data shows the average for tutors from Spain above Latin America.

I’m a native teacher from Spain, so you learn the Spanish of Spain, which many exams and universities use as a reference.

Certified teacher vs informal tutor

An informal tutor can be great for conversation. A certified teacher adds method: how to explain a mistake, how to plan progress and how to prepare for an exam.

My credentials:

  • DELE examiner certified by the Instituto Cervantes.
  • Master’s degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
  • More than five years of experience.

italki’s guide places certified teachers at about €28 to €74+ per hour.

Lesson length, frequency and packages

  • Longer lessons cost more per session, but often less per hour.
  • Regular lessons make progress faster, so you need fewer hours in total.
  • Packages lower the hourly price. italki quotes discounts of 10 to 20 percent in its guide.

How much should you pay to learn Spanish?

A useful rule: pay for what your goal needs, not for the cheapest hour.

Spanish tutor cost for conversation practice

For casual speaking practice, lower prices can be enough. italki suggests about €4 to €18 per hour for travel and basic conversation, and €18 to €37 for everyday fluency.

If you want conversation with structured corrections, see my online Spanish conversation classes.

Spanish lessons price for DELE and SIELE preparation

Exam preparation costs more because it requires an expert: someone who knows the tasks, timing and criteria. italki quotes about €28 to €74 per hour for DELE and SIELE.

That is where an examiner makes the biggest difference. See my DELE preparation course.

Cost of advanced Spanish classes

At B2 and above, progress depends on precise feedback, so experience matters more than at the beginning. See my advanced Spanish classes.

Is a private Spanish tutor worth the cost?

It depends on your goal and your discipline. A tutor is worth it when you need feedback you can’t give yourself.

Private tutor vs group class vs app

  • App: cheap and flexible. Good for vocabulary and habit. It doesn’t correct your speaking or writing.
  • Group class: lower price per hour, social and structured. You speak less and corrections are general.
  • Private tutor: higher price per hour, but all the time is yours. You get corrections for your mistakes and a plan.

Many learners combine them. If your priority is speaking, passing an exam or getting past a plateau, 1-on-1 is the most direct route.

Is online cheaper than in-person?

Usually yes. italki estimates online lessons are 10 to 30 percent cheaper than in-person ones. You also save travel time and can choose a teacher from anywhere.

Spanish tutor cost: frequently asked questions

How much does a Spanish tutor cost per hour?

On the market, online private tutors usually charge between about €14 and €55 per hour, according to italki’s 2026 guide, with big differences by experience and credentials. My lessons cost €28 per hour, and less in packs of 10 and 20. The table on this page compares the options.

How much do online Spanish lessons cost?

Online lessons usually cost less than in-person ones, by about 10 to 30 percent according to italki. Platforms like Preply and Superprof show averages of around €16 to €23 per hour. With me, a one-hour online lesson costs €28.

Why do Spanish tutor prices vary so much?

Four things: the tutor’s experience, certification, where they are from, and the lesson format. A certified teacher with exam experience costs more than an informal tutor, because you pay for method, not just time. Packages also lower the hourly price.

Why is a certified Spanish tutor more expensive?

Because you pay for method and expertise. A certified examiner can explain why an answer loses points and how to fix it, and that saves hours of trial and error. In my case: DELE examiner certified by the Instituto Cervantes, Master’s in teaching Spanish and more than five years of experience.

Is there a free trial Spanish lesson?

The trial lesson costs €10 and lasts 30 minutes. There is no commitment to continue after it.

Do you offer discounts for packs of lessons?

Is a private Spanish tutor worth the cost?

It’s worth it when you need feedback you can’t give yourself: correction of your speaking and writing, a plan and accountability.
