What is advanced Spanish? B2, C1 and C2 levels explained

“Advanced” means different things depending on who you ask. Here is how I use it:

  • B2 (upper intermediate): you handle most conversations and texts, but you still hesitate and make mistakes with complex structures.
  • C1 (advanced): you express ideas fluently and with flexibility, at work, in study and in social life.
  • C2 (mastery): you understand almost everything and express yourself with precision, including subtle nuances.

My advanced classes are for B2 learners and above. If you are below B2, the lessons will move too fast to be useful.

Signs you’re ready for advanced Spanish classes

  • You understand most of what you hear, but your answers come out slowly or sound textbook-like.
  • You keep making the same mistakes, even though you know the rule.
  • You avoid certain structures (subjunctive, reported speech) because you don’t trust yourself.
  • You need a certificate, or you are preparing for a job or a move where your Spanish has to be spotless.

Check your Spanish level before you book

Not sure whether you are B2 or C1? Book a trial lesson and we will find out together in a short conversation. I’ll tell you your level, what is holding you back and what to work on first.

What you will learn in our advanced Spanish lessons

Every plan is personal. These are the four areas we usually work on, depending on your goal.

Advanced grammar: subjunctive, conditionals and reported speech

The structures that separate B2 from C1 are the ones that get avoided. We work on:

  • Subjunctive in all its uses, including the ones that confuse even advanced students.
  • Conditional sentences and hypothetical language.
  • Reported speech and passive constructions.
  • Verbal periphrases, por and para, and prepositions after verbs.

We practise in context, not in endless gap-fill exercises.

Speaking fluently and naturally: connectors, idioms and register

Fluency at this level is about choice. We work on:

  • Connectors that organise your ideas and sound natural.
  • Idioms and everyday expressions from Spain.
  • Register: how to speak with a boss, a friend or a client.
  • Pronunciation and intonation, when they affect clarity.

Advanced listening and reading with real materials

We use real Spanish: news, podcasts, film, interviews and literature. You choose topics that interest you, and I choose tasks that stretch you.

Formal and professional writing

Writing is where most C1 students struggle. You bring emails, reports or essays, and I correct them line by line. We work on structure, tone and the typical mistakes that make a text sound non-native.

How our advanced Spanish classes work

1-on-1 live lessons on Google Meet, taught in Spanish

One hour, just you and me. I speak Spanish from the start and adapt my vocabulary and speed so you can follow without switching to English. That immersion is what makes the difference at this level.

A personalised plan based on your goals

In the first lesson I ask what you need Spanish for: work, an exam, living in Spain or simply speaking like yourself. From there we choose priorities and a rhythm. If your goal changes, the plan changes.

Written corrections and materials after every lesson

During the lesson I note your mistakes. Afterwards you receive written corrections and the materials we used: expressions, connectors and the errors to avoid. You can go back to them whenever you want.

Advanced Spanish classes for DELE C1, DELE C2 and SIELE

If your goal is an official certificate, advanced lessons are the natural base. I’m a certified DELE examiner, so I know what a marked task looks like and where students lose points.

We work on the exam tasks, timing and strategy at the same time as your Spanish. See the DELE preparation page for the full exam path.

How to learn advanced Spanish: what actually works at B2 and C1

Why progress slows down after B2

Up to B2, almost everything you learn is visible: new words, new tenses. After B2, improvement is subtler. You already communicate, so mistakes stop blocking you and nobody corrects them. The result is a plateau: you understand, you get by, but you don’t sound the way you want to.

Habits that make the difference

  • Get your mistakes corrected. Without feedback, errors become habits.
  • Write regularly and have it reviewed. Writing exposes gaps that speaking hides.
  • Listen and read daily, with attention. Choose Spanish from Spain and Latin America, not only classroom material.
  • Speak with a teacher who pushes you. Comfortable conversation won’t take you from B2 to C1.

Meet your advanced Spanish teacher

Hi, I’m Cristina. I’m a native Spanish teacher from Spain, a DELE examiner certified by the Instituto Cervantes, and I hold a Master’s degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. I have more than five years of experience with individual and group classes.

My method is communicative and student-centred. I like precise lessons, good humour and a relaxed atmosphere where mistakes are part of the process.

What advanced students say about our Spanish classes

25 reviews

She is helping me prepare for the DELE C1, adapts the classes to my needs and explains everything very well. The classes are very useful and dynamic.

Nicole · October 2026

She shares her own materials that make it very clear how to approach any task: common expressions, connectors, typical mistakes to watch out for. Thanks to the classes with her, I feel confident that I will face the DELE C1 exam without stress.

Kuba · September 2026

Her classes are very dynamic, clear and well structured. She stands out both in oral conversation classes, helping you gain fluency and confidence when speaking, and in DELE exam preparation, thanks to her organised methodology and her deep knowledge of the exam format.

Frequently asked questions about advanced Spanish classes

What level is advanced Spanish?

Advanced Spanish usually means B2, C1 and C2 on the European framework (CEFR). B2 is upper intermediate: you handle most situations but still hesitate with complex structures. C1 is advanced: you express yourself fluently and flexibly. C2 is mastery. My advanced classes start at B2.

How do I know if I’m ready for advanced Spanish classes?

You’re probably ready if you understand most of what you hear but your answers sound slow or textbook-like, if you keep making the same mistakes, or if you avoid structures such as the subjunctive or reported speech. The easiest way to find out is a trial lesson: after a short conversation I’ll tell you your level and what is holding you back.

Why does my Spanish stop improving after B2?

Because up to B2 progress is visible: new words, new tenses. After B2 you already communicate, so mistakes don’t block you and nobody corrects them. That’s the plateau. The way out is precise feedback on your own speaking and writing, plus real material and a plan with clear priorities. That’s what we work on in class.

What will we actually work on in advanced classes?

It depends on your goal, but usually four areas: advanced grammar (subjunctive, conditionals, reported speech, passive), speaking fluently and naturally (connectors, idioms, register), listening and reading with real materials such as news, podcasts and film, and formal and professional writing. I build the plan around what you need.

Are the advanced classes in Spanish or in English?

Entirely in Spanish. At this level, immersion is the point. I adapt my speed and vocabulary so you can follow, and I explain difficult points in simpler Spanish rather than switching to English.

Can I take advanced Spanish classes in a group?

Not at the moment. My classes are one-to-one, so every minute is for your goals and your mistakes. Many advanced students prefer this because the corrections are about their errors, not the group’s.

Do advanced classes include DELE C1 or C2 exam preparation?

They can. I’m a DELE examiner certified by the Instituto Cervantes, so if your goal is a certificate we can combine advanced Spanish work with exam tasks, timing and strategy. See my DELE preparation course for the full exam path.

How long does it take to go from B2 to C1?

It depends on your starting point, how often you study and how much you practise outside class, so I won’t promise a fixed number of weeks. After the trial lesson I’ll give you a realistic estimate and a plan based on your level and your goal.

Do you offer a level test before I book?

The trial lesson is the level test. In a short conversation I assess your level, tell you what you do well and what limits you, and suggest a plan.

How much do your advanced Spanish lessons cost?

A single lesson costs €28, and packs of 10 or 20 lower the price per lesson. Progress at this level comes from steady work, so most advanced students choose a pack. See the pricing page for the full breakdown.
