Spanish Present Tense Regular Verbs Exercises: -ar, -er, -ir

Spanish verbs change their ending for each person. Regular verbs follow a clear pattern, so if you know _hablar_, _comer_ and _vivir_, you know hundreds of verbs. Take the infinitive, remove _-ar_, _-er_ or _-ir_, and add the ending.

The rule

Verbs ending in -ar: hablar

  • yo: hablo, trabajo
  • tú: hablas, estudias
  • él / ella: habla, trabaja
  • nosotros: hablamos, estudiamos
  • vosotros / ellos: habláis, hablan

Verbs ending in -er: comer

  • yo: como, bebo
  • tú: comes, aprendes
  • él / ella: come, bebe
  • nosotros: comemos, aprendemos
  • vosotros / ellos: coméis, comen

Verbs ending in -ir: vivir

  • yo: vivo, escribo
  • tú: vives, abres
  • él / ella: vive, abre
  • nosotros: vivimos, escribimos
  • vosotros / ellos: vivís, viven

Present tense endings

él / ellahablacomevive
nosotroshablamoscomemosvivimos
vosotroshabláiscoméisvivís
ellos / ellashablancomenviven

A quick trick

The yo form always ends in -o for all three groups. After that, -ar verbs use the letter a (hablas, habla) and -er / -ir verbs use e (comes, vive). Only nosotros and vosotros show the difference between -er and -ir: comemos / vivimos, coméis / vivís.

Common mistakes

  • Using the infinitive: Yo hablar español instead of Yo hablo español.
  • Mixing groups: Ella comа or Él vivа instead of Ella come and Él vive.
  • Using -emos with -ir verbs: vivemos instead of vivimos.
